Brazilian side Gremio are reportedly interested in signing Juventus midfielder Arthur Melo, with the Serie A star rumoured to be in talks with Arsenal over a potential move. According to Tuttosport, Arthur’s former side have registered an interest in the 25-year-old as Juventus look to offload the South American this summer, with the midfielder no longer a part of Massimilano Allegri’s plans for the upcoming season.

As per the report, AS Roma have since dropped their interest in Arthur following rumours that Jose Mourinho was interested in bringing the Brazilian to the Italian capital, with Tuttosport also noting that Arsenal’s pursuit of the former FC Barcelona star has also slowed down.

Reports emerged earlier this week that Arsenal were in talks to sign Arthur, with Edu Gaspar eyeing the midfielder in the January transfer window as a potential midfield option, though a deal was never concluded as Juventus reportedly only wanted a loan with an obligation to buy. Since then, Arthur has continued to hardly feature for Juventus and has recently been announced as not a travelling player for the club’s pre-season tour of the United States, joining the likes of Aaron Ramsey and Adrien Rabiot back in Turin for standard training.
Indeed, whilst a return to Gremio would be a poetic ending to Arthur’s time with Juventus, a deal could be impossible given the fact that the Brazilian giants are now in the second tier after suffering a shock relegation last season from the top flight, meaning the Porto Alegre-based side would need a miracle to sign the midfielder.
Everyone loves a comeback story in football, especially when it comes to a player joining their former club in disarray, yet for Arthur and Gremio, the current situation makes a reunion incredible difficult to picture unless the midfielder is willing to forgo his wages and stop talks with Arsenal, if they are indeed even taking place.
